Loyola University Chicago Stritch school of medicine
Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
Residency Program
Welcome to the website for the categorical thoracic surgery residency training program of the Loyola University Medical Center Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery! We hope this site will answer most of your questions about our two year program, and the environment in which we educate and practice. If not, feel free to contact us using the link to the left.
Loyola University Medical Center is located in Maywood, Illinois, one of the western suburbs of the greater Chicago metropolitan area. In partnership with the Stritch School of Medicine and the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, and affiliated with the neighboring Hines Veteran Administration Hospital, we serve a diverse patient population with a varied spectrum of clinical disease from throughout the Midwest.
Our residents benefit from a rich volume of high-risk as well as bread-and-butter procedures performed in a modern tertiary care center with award winning nursing care, that is consistently ranked among the top cardiovascular centers in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report magazine.
Among the cutting edge technologies our program utilizes are Percutaneous Valves (CoreValve and Sapien), Complex Endovascular Stent Grafting, Ventricular Assist Devices, Minimally Invasive Valves, Robot Assisted VATS resections, as well as lung and heart transplantation. Revascularization is performed both on and off pump, through traditional sternotomy, and through minimally invasive approaches. Antiarhythmia surgery is a frequent feature of our open procedures, and is also performed in the minimally invasive Convergent approach.
Ninety percent of our thoracic surgery is performed through robotic approaches. This work is enhanced through augmented reality platforms, Cytalux localization, and ION robotic bronchoscopy. Our thoracic practice features strong multi-disciplinary collaboration with orthopedics, neurosurgery, plastics surgery, vascular surgery, ENT, and surgical oncology.
Loyola University Medical Center has several adult specialties that are nationally ranked by the U.S. News and World Report, including Cardiology and Heart Surgery.
The essential focus for the busy applicant considering alternative training programs is found in the Clinical Volume and Recent Graduate pages. Review of the Clinical Volume page will show you the final case logs of our graduates for the last six years. It is passage through this volume, guided by technical and didactic instruction from our faculty that yields the results demonstrated in the Recent Graduate page: surgeons who are confident prior to the conclusion of their categorical training, and successful in their careers.
